CARACAS-CANAIMA NATIONAL PARK- PORT OF SPAIN- GEORGETWN- KAIETEUR FALLS - SAINT LAURENT DE MARONI - KOUROU - DEVIL´S ISLANDS - CAYENNE

13 Days / 12 Nights

Day 1. Caracas- Guayana City

Arrival in Caracas. Assistance at the airport. Transfer to the domestic airport (5 min. walking) to take a flight to Ciudad Guayana (Puerto Ordaz) Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 2. Canaima National Park (BLD)

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport. Flight to the wonderful Canaima National Park, the biggest park in Venezuela (3 million hectares): It is surely one of the most unspoiled locations in the world today. Home of the Angel Falls (the highest waterfalls in the world, 979 mts. high), with more than 80 beautiful waterfalls, Canaima is a majestic ancient land of tepuyes and one of the oldest formations on the planet (1.8 billion years old).

After crossing the Canaima lagoon in Indigenous canoes conducted by Indigenous, we will pass the Ucaima, Golondrina, and Hacha waterfalls that fall spectacularly into the lagoon.

Take a short walk through the tropical forest until arriving in the base of Sapo waterfalls. Here we have time for a short bath, besides, we have an excellent view of the savannahs surrounding tropical forest and the tepuyes: unexplored majestic tabletop mountains considered the oldest rock formations on our planet. We continue the excursion by walking behind the curtain of water (some 200 meters), which descends from the dashing Carrao River.

Return to the Camp for lunch. If weather conditions allow it you will take the excursion; Overflight Angel Falls. Time free to visit the handicrafts boutiques or the Indigenous Community. Dinner and overnight

Day 3. Canaima National Park-Caracas (B)

After breakfast profit to take a last swim in the Canaima lagoon. Transfer to the landing strip to take the flight back to Caracas. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight

Day 4. Port Of Spain-Georgetown (B)

Early transfer to the airport. Flight to Port of Spain. Arrival. Panoramic City Tour in Port of Spain. Trinidad boasts of having everything anyone else has in the world, twin and leaning towers, a myriad of races, and more. Discover the secret of the color of the Parliament building and visit Queen’s Park Savannah and the Magnificent Seven. The Savannah had Graf Zeppelin and other aircrafts making visits in the early 1900s. Visit the old slave settlement of Free Town, now Belmont.

See the original homes of Kwame Ture (Stockley Carmichael) founder of the Black Panther and Power movements and Maycock, the first Free Slave to own land in the area. We’ll also get the rich scientific and cultural history of the area. Continuation of your flight to Georgetown. Arrival and transfer to the Hotel. Overnight.

Day 5. Georgetown (B)

Breakfast. Formerly British Guiana, this now independent country is the most western of the three Guiana. Enjoy a morning Georgetown city tour, highlighting the extraordinary wooden architecture and shop in its exciting markets and craft shops. The tour will continue with a visit to the Cathedral, the tallest wooden building in the world, the museum, and other historic buildings. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 6. Kaieteur Falls (BL)

After breakfast take a flight to Kaieteur, the second world’s highest free-falling waterfall. After Venezuela’s Angel Falls, 100 meters wide created as the Potaro River makes a sheer drop of 228 meters, nearly five times the height of Niagara Falls. The spectacle is the more impressive for its remoteness and it is altogether possible that we’ll be the only persons viewing it.

Here we will hope to find White-chinned and White-tipped Swifts swirling over the gorge, and perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to see the astonishingly colorful Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock close by. Kaieteur supports a unique microenvironment with Tank Bromeliads, the largest in the world in which the tiny Golden frog spends its entire life. Continue to Orinduik Falls on the Brazil border where the Ireng River thunders over steps and terraces of solid semi-precious stone. Overnight.

Day 7. Paramaribo UNESCO World Heritage (B)

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport. Flight to Paramaribo, capital of Suriname, an attractive city with magnificent architecture. Transfer to the Hotel. Overnight.

Day 8. City Tour in Paramaribo and Commewijne Plantation (BL)

Breakfast. This morning we will visit the capital of Suriname, been placed on the UNESCO “World Heritage” list of historical monuments since 2002. We will take you on a guided tour along with the most prominent historic locations in the city center where you will be impressed by the outstanding (wooden) architecture.

You will also visit Fort Zeelandia, Palmentuin (Palm Garden), the Waterkant, the Central Market, and on the way, see one of the remarkable features of Paramaribo, a synagogue next to a mosque, reflecting the harmony and respect among the people of Suriname. We continue our tour to the Commewijne district.

Commewijne lies at the Commewijne River, right opposite the capital city Paramaribo. The tour takes you along former colonial plantations of which most are now abandoned and no longer active. The first stop is made at “Meerzorg‟, a former coffee plantation. We then head to the confluence of the Commewijne and Suriname River, at Nieuw Amsterdam, with a visit to the open-air museum Nieuw Amsterdam. After a visit to the museum, we head to a former sugar plantation “Mariënburg”.

After lunch a typical Javanese food (Warung) we visit Plantation “Pepperpot‟. In the afternoon we return to Paramaribo. Overnight.

Day 9. Saint Laurent de Maroni-Kourou (B)

Breakfast. Land transfer from Paramaribo to Albina (in Suriname). Then, take a boat (5 minutes) and cross the river that divides both countries. Arrival to Saint Laurent de Maroni in French Guiana. Visit this antique gem of a colonial past, with its squared architecture which dates back to 1878; it is a touching testimony of the camp where the most dangerous prisoners from France were confined to the high-security prisons in the jungle, far from the old continent. Welcome to customs and transfer to Kourou. Overnight.

Day 10. Kourou Space Centre (B)

Breakfast. Half-day visit to the Guyana Space Centre, located a few kilometers from downtown. This cradle of the European Space adventure was elected in 1964 because of its optimal location near the Equator. Occupies 96.000 acres and employs more than a thousand people.

The tour begins with the European space conquest at the Jupiter Saloon which is the Control Tower where operators, media, personalities, and VIP clients gathered for the rockets Ariane IV and V launch. Continue the visit through the museum. (This tour is available in French only, the film is in English) For an English-speaking guide, please request. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 11. Tour to Devil’s Islands (BL)

Breakfast. Depart from the hotel for a full-day excursion to Devil’s Islands in Catamaran to discover the vestiges of the high-security prison in the Salut Islands. Located 15 Km from Kourou at the banks of muddy waters, the Royal island, Devil’s Island, and Saith Joseph Island constitute the emblematic places of the French Penal Colony. Lunch at the Royal Island. Guided visit of the island, including museums, main buildings, child cemetery, hospital, prison building, the condemned place, the church, the madhouse, guard’s house, you will appreciate the universe where condemned were deportees.

The most famous prisoners were Alfred Dreyfus, Guillaume Seznec, and Henry Charrière, who described in his notorious book ‘Papillon’ his stay and attempts of escape. In the afternoon, you will have time to enjoy the beautiful landscape and a delicious bath at the Legoff bay. You will visit Saint Joseph or ‘Silent Island’ and its paradisiac snail’s beach. Return to Kourou. Overnight.

Day 12. Cayenne (B)

Breakfast. Land transfer to Cayenne. Half-Day City Tour in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana, the colonial city where you can still find ‘creoles’ houses made of wood and picturesque old stores from Chinese and Lebanese merchants. Visit the local market (Only on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) privileged place for an encounter with the Cayenne inhabitants and the whole region: Surinam, Hmong, Haitians, Brazilians, etc.

If there is enough time, we will visit the Palmistes Square, The Franconie Museum, the Jesuits Palace, the Ceperou Fort, and the beautiful creoles houses. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight.

Day 13. Cayenne (B)

Breakfast. Transfer to the airport to take your connecting flight back home.
